Mountain Spring Bay, Jamaica

A hot spot is forming in Jamaica. No, not a coronavirus hot spot. Thank goodness. This is a travel hot spot. A handful of new resorts are in the works for the Caribbean island’s north coast. Not Montego Bay or Ocho Rios. Their beaches have been popular for decades. The hotel boom is happening in Trelawny, which lies east of Rose Hall. If the name sounds familiar, it’s due to all the Olympic athletes (hello, Usain Bolt) the parish has produced. There won’t be any sprinting during your trip, though. Once you arrive at Ocean Coral Spring, it’s all about relaxing.

Ocean Coral Spring is Spain-based H10 Hotels first foray into Jamaica. The all-inclusive resort opened at the end of last year. It was just starting to find its groove when the pandemic stopped travelers around the world. The island wasn’t hit hard, and a curfew has helped limit the number of cases. So Jamaica is open again. Ocean Coral Spring will begin welcoming guests at the end of the month.

The first thing you’ll notice is the resort’s funky lobby. Black-and-white floors. Retro furniture. A bright red airplane overhead. The second thing you’ll notice is the massive wall of windows at the end of the entryway. They overlook the huge, meandering pool. It’s flanked by long buildings that contain the junior suites. Swim Up Junior Suites, with direct access to the pool, are on the ground floor. While Rooftop Junior Suites have two floors, a sun terrace, and a jacuzzi. They’re all decorated with shades of blue that mimic the Caribbean Sea that’s never far from sight.

Now the fun stuff. In addition to the main pool, there’s a lazy river and a small waterpark. The Despacio Spa Centre features an indoor pool, a jacuzzi, a sauna, a steam bath, and a true relaxation area. Ten restaurants—including ones that serve Indian, Italian, Thai, and, of course, Jamaican food—nine bars, and coffee and ice cream shops ensure you’ll be satiated 24 hours a day. A bowling alley, a nightclub, and a theater will keep you entertained, as well. Just don’t forget the real reason you’re here. It’s the gorgeous, white-sand beach at the far end of the resort. It’s your reward for diligently remaining under lockdown for months. Big up.
